Acupuncture is a holistic healing treatment that involves inserting very thin needles into a person’s skin at specific points on the body to a specific depth. These needles are hair-thin, sterile, individually packaged, and disposable.

The patient will be asked to lie down on their back, front, or one side, depending on where the needles are to be inserted. As each needle is inserted, the patient may feel a very brief stinging or tingling sensation.

Acupuncture works by balancing vital energy and it has a neurological effect also. It makes the person feel energized and relaxed.

Acupuncture points are generally seen as places where nerves, muscles, and connective tissue can be stimulated. The stimulation of these points will help to increase the blood flow and stimulates the body’s immune and healing system. This immune and circulation system stimulation helps to relieve migraines and tension headaches.

Instead of needles, other forms of stimulation are sometimes used over the acupuncture points, including:

  • Heat (moxibustion)
  • Pressure (acupressure)
  • Friction
  • Suction (cupping)
  • Impulses of electromagnetic energy.

Acupuncture helps to restore the flow of positive energy in the body and also removes the negative energy that is causing you pain. This healing therapy attempts to unblock or redirect the flow of energy by inserting very thin needles into specific points ( acupoints) in the skin tissue. The needle stimulates the nerves to release hormones, such as endorphins, that may trigger a healing response in your body.

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese medicine which believes the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi) throughout the body. When the qi is flowing well to all the places,  a person would experience good mental and physical health. When the qi is flowing incorrectly (blocked or deficient), it would cause illness.  By applying acupuncture to specific points with appropriate combinations aims to help people in achieving a balance of this energy as a result providing relief for many ailments.

Acupuncture is complementary medicine. Acupuncture is often used as an alternative therapy alongside modern medical treatment to relieve various symptoms like pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, depression, hot flashes, xerostomia, neuropathy and sleeping problems, etc.

This therapy helps patients heal with fewer drugs and improves medical outcomes when used alongside standard medicine. The use of acupuncture as complementary and alternative medicine has increased as it has effective results in individuals suffering from a post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma-related disorders.

Acupuncture may work by causing physical responses in nerve cells, the pituitary gland, and parts of the brain, affecting blood pressure and body temperature.

In 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) listed a number of conditions in which they say acupuncture has been proven effective.
Irritable bowel syndrome
Sore Throat
Menstrual Pain
Back pain
Muscle cramping
Muscle pain and weakness
Neck pain
Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction
Parkinson's disease
Postoperative pain
Allergic Rhinitis

Acupuncture in Dental Disorders

Acupuncture is a beneficial traditional technique that can be used in dentistry.

Acupuncture treatment mainly helps to relieve the pain left by dental surgery and pulled teeth. It can also be used to manage other conditions effectively like.

  • Dental pain
  • Dental anxiety
  • Gag reflex.
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain
  • Temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
  • TMJ is clicking and locking.

acupuncture can be considered as a supplement to current dental practice as it has an analgesic effect for various dental disorders. The role of acupuncture in dental pain may not involve removing the cause of the pain, but rather helps in achieving pain relief.
