Clinical Significance

CA 19-9 is a tumor-associated antigen that is elevated mostly in patients with Advanced Pancreatic Cancer. It may also be elevated in other cancers, conditions, diseases such as colorectal cancer, lung cancer, gall bladder cancer, gallstones, pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and liver disease. Although, increase in the levels of CA 19-9 is not distinctively suggestive of pancreatic cancer, currently, it is the single most useful blood test to differentiate benign disorders from the malignant ones.
