Clinical Significance

Human growth hormone (hGH) is a polypeptide hormone which is secreted by the pituitary gland. It stimulates growth, cell reproduction, and cell regeneration in humans, thus influences normal growth and development of the human body. hGH levels in blood peak during childhood to adolescence, after which they decrease steadily. Deficiency of hGH in children and teenagers results in dwarfism and excess secretion can lead to gigantism. Excess secretion of hGH is generally associated with tumors of the pituitary gland.
